Still Looking for My Favorite Bottle

Several weeks back, I was just chatting with the guy next to me on the plane. And I have to admit that I’m one of those people who just can’t seem to help themselves when it comes to the Duty Free catalogue. I absolutely have to take a peak every time. He saw me looking at the fragrances and asked me if I collected perfumes. Apparently, every woman he’d ever met had a huge collection of perfumes, lipsticks, or shoes. Sometimes, all three.

Now I never really thought of myself as a collector, per se, but I do like fragrances. Sometime, long ago, people started spreading this rumor that every woman should have one “signature scent” that she would wear everyday. But as much as I believe in loyalty and fidelity, I could never imagine wearing just one perfume for the rest of my life, just as I can not possibly imagine drinking only one type of tea forever. But that doesn’t mean we don’t have favorites.

One of my favorite perfumes was Givenchy’s Organza Indecence. It was a warm, rich, enveloping scent, reminiscent of the beloved vanillas of my youth, but all grown up. I remember a saleswoman at Lord and Taylor’s shoving a sample into my face when it was just released. From the moment I spritzed it onto my wrist, it was love at first sniff.

Through the years, I had always kept a bottle of it close by. And oh, what a beautiful bottle it was. Golden in color and flowing in shape, through the texture of the glass, you could almost see the shimmer of her dress. But then, in the rush of my move at graduation, I closed a drawer too roughly and my bottle tumbled, crashing to the floor. I felt like I had lost a dear friend.

So, somewhere along the way, I found out that it had been discontinued, and I was heartbroken. But then, while trolling around the internet, I discovered that Givenchy has re-released it, in some mythical version. But of course, they changed the beautiful bottle to a simple rectangle. Why, oh why must they do this to me?

Look at them! How can we even compare the two? I guess I have to continue searching ebay. Or I can just keep wearing Heavenly, just like 90% of the female population in America.
