Dreams Can Come True – Gabrielle

I am now officially relieved of my role as house mother. Finally. Maybe I should have just taken Jessica’s tactic of not speaking with the underclassmen so that they never discover your name, and thus never harass you. Not to say all underclassmen harass, some are sweet and wonderful, but living with a few lively individuals and interacting with them even once in a while can be a draining experience. Unfortunately, I seem completely incapable of trapping myself in my room without social interaction with those around me in the manner at which Jessica seems amazingly skillful and practiced. Thank goodness I love my suite.
On a different note, the New York Times had this article on shackling pregnant inmates during labor. And excerpts such as the one below really make me wonder if the writers are hired for their sarcastic sense of humor. This is a mild example, of course, but I mean, aren’t we talking about serious human rights issues here?
Many states justify restraints because the prisoners remain escape risks, though there have apparently been no instances of escape attempts by women in labor. “You can’t convince me that it’s ever really happened,” Ms. Newell said. “You certainly wouldn’t get far.”
