Thoughts and Ramblings
I guess I never had the time to catch up. 6 days without internet was hard, I’ll tell you.
Actually, I really believe that work is harder to avoid these days. 20 years ago, you could go on vacation, and unless you told your boss your hotel phone number (in which case, wow, are you asking for it), she’d never get a hold of you. But now, with globalisation and technology, we’re drawn back towards our ever more stressful jobs even as we work to avoid them. Your boss could just press the speed dial code for your cell phone, and there you are!
Really, think about it. Everyone has wireless ethernet on campus, but what’s more, people around the globe are beginning to pick up on wireless high speed modems. You could be anywhere in the world, and all you’d have to do is turn on the laptop, and you’re online and close to the work you love. No lack of network drop will keep you from it. 20 years ago, we would have to make an effort to make contact with the world we left behind. Now, it’s second nature.
Are we enslaved to our high-tech world, or are we simply taking another step towards higher efficiency?
